Hello and Welcome

Hello everyone!
I’m Rachel Siska. Welcome to my blog. I’m nearing the end of my IUPUI MLIS journey and cannot believe it has gone by so quickly. For more than four years I have been working the circulation desk at the IUN campus’ library. It was working there that I started to realize I wouldn’t mind working in libraries as a career. Yet, I first became interested in libraries because of my love for books.
I have absolutely loved reading since I was young. I read the American Girl books, many of the Magic Tree House, and some Goosebumps. Now I enjoy several YA fantasy and science fiction series such as the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, the Tiger’s Curse Series by Colleen Houck, the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyers, and the Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas. The series I am currently hooked on is the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. It’s the first series I have been going through by listening to the audiobooks.
I look forward to learning about Reader’s Advisory. The week we briefly discussed Reader’s Advisory in S501 has really stuck with me and I knew that if I could, I wanted to take this class. My favorite part of LIS is learning about more ways to serve patrons. I love helping patrons find what they need. Seeing them happy and satisfied makes me feel accomplished. Yet, I know there is still a lot I can learn. As I mentioned above I read YA...and that’s honestly about it. So, this class will really help me learn about Adult fiction.
I’m excited to expand my reading horizons and learn with all of you!

  1. Hi Rachel,

Congratulations on nearing the end of this graduate program, very exciting! I work in the children's department and I often recommend the American Girl books to kiddo's who are looking for a series. Did you know they are still releasing new books? I just processed two new series this past week. It makes me happy they are still around! I also recommend Goosebumps when someone is looking for something creepy, although I did not read those as a child haha. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Emily,

I like to hear that kids now are still reading what I read as a child. I did hear at some point that they were releasing new American Girl books, but since that's not what I read anymore, I didn't look much into it.
I only got into Goosebumps because for some strange reason as I child I actually enjoyed being scared. Do not ask me where it came from because I have no idea. Today, I dislike almost anything remotely horror.

  2. I absolutely loved American Girl Doll books growing up. They were what got me into historical fiction. My favorites were Kit and Molly! Other series I really enjoyed that I would recommend to kids are Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie: the Rose Years.

The Raven Cycle is one of my favorite series! After you finish that, I would recommend the Shiver trilogy which is also by Maggie Stiefvater or anything by Holly Black. I haven't read anything by Sarah J. Maas but people really seem to enjoy her. I should probably give her a chance sometime.
